This seems obvious, perhaps the most immediate and certain thing there is. And yet consciousness remains one of the deepest unsolved problems in philosophy and science. We can describe nearly everything else in the universe in physical and mathematical terms. The difficulty is not that we know nothing about consciousness — neuroscience has made remarkable progress in mapping the brain processes that correlate with conscious experience. What Consciousness Is
Consciousness, at its most basic, refers to subjective experience — the fact that there is something it is like to be you. When you see red, you have a specific visual experience; when you feel pain, you have a specific qualitative sensation. Philosophers call these qualitative aspects of experience “qualia” (singular: quale): the redness of red, the painfulness of pain, the taste of coffee. Qualia are the subjective, first-person features of experience that seem to be over and above the mere physical processing of information.
The “easy problems” of consciousness — called easy only by contrast — are questions about the functional aspects: how the brain integrates information, how it produces behavior in response to stimuli, how it distinguishes sleep from wakefulness, how attention works. The Hard Problem Explained
Imagine a complete neuroscientific explanation of what happens in your brain when you see a ripe tomato. We could describe every neuron firing, every neurotransmitter, every circuit activation, every information processing step in the visual system. This description could in principle be complete — it would leave nothing physical unexplained. And yet, it seems like something would still be left out: the experience of seeing red. The explanation tells us everything the brain does in response to red wavelengths; it doesn’t explain why there is any experience of redness at all.
Frank Jackson’s famous thought experiment: Mary is a brilliant scientist who knows everything physical about color vision but has lived her whole life in a black-and-white room and has never seen color. When Mary leaves the room and sees red for the first time, does she learn something new? Most people intuit that she does — she learns what red looks like. If so, there’s something about experience that wasn’t captured in her complete physical knowledge. This is the knowledge argument for the existence of qualia as something beyond the physical.
The Main Philosophical Positions
Physicalism (Materialism). Consciousness is entirely physical — either identical to brain processes or wholly produced by them, with no remainder. The hard problem, on this view, either dissolves under closer analysis (what we call experience just is certain brain processes) or is an illusion that better neuroscience will dissolve. Dualism. Consciousness is genuinely non-physical — it exists as a separate kind of thing from physical matter. Descartes famously held this view: mind and body are distinct substances. What Neuroscience Has and Hasn’t Explained
Neuroscience has made remarkable progress on the easy problems. We have detailed accounts of visual processing, attention mechanisms, the neural correlates of various states of consciousness (sleep, anesthesia, meditation), and the brain regions implicated in self-referential processing. The neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs) — the minimal brain states sufficient for conscious experience — are an active research area with real results.
What neuroscience has not explained — and this is the core of the hard problem — is why there are any NCCs at all, rather than just the brain processing going on in the dark. We know that certain brain states correlate with certain experiences. We don’t know why those brain states produce experience rather than just process information without experience. This gap — between correlation and explanation — is where the hard problem lives, and no amount of neuroscientific progress in mapping correlations resolves it without a philosophical account of why the correlations hold.
Why This Matters Beyond Philosophy
The question of consciousness has direct implications for artificial intelligence, animal welfare, medicine, and ethics. If consciousness is entirely a function of information processing, then sufficiently sophisticated AI systems might be conscious — and might have morally relevant experiences that require ethical consideration. If consciousness requires specific biological structures, AI systems might not be conscious regardless of their sophistication. Different positions on the hard problem generate very different answers to questions about AI consciousness, animal experience, the ethics of vegetative state patients, and the nature of death.
The stakes for animal welfare: Whether animals are conscious — whether there is something it is like to be a fish, an octopus, a mouse — determines whether their pain is morally relevant. Behaviorist approaches denied this; modern neuroscience supports the presence of neural correlates of experience in many animals. But the hard problem reminds us that neural correlates are not the same as experience — even if we know an animal has the relevant brain structures, we can’t fully resolve from the outside whether there is something it is like to be that animal.
